Who are the people that are most open to being in a state of between seeing. They are most likely to be part of the group known as Cultural Creatives. You can read more about them at the authors website. I like the website but its unfortunate it hasn't been updated in a number of years. I'd strongly recommend buying the book. Throughout history there have been 2 types of people in America. They are the Modernists and the Traditionalists. About 40 years ago a third group started that have been named the Cultural Creatives. What follows is a description of each of these groups and a synopsis of the promise of the Cultural Creatives. Read it and notice which group you relate most to.
Modernists
a) 48% of Americans or 93,000,000
b) Its the culture we see at all levels of government, military and business
c) Its the culture of professional sports leagues, chain stores and malls, most TV programs and most magazines and newspapers
d) More men then women average income of $42,000
e) A belief the technology economy is reshaping the world
What is important to modernists?
a) Making a lot of money
b) Climbing the ladder to success
c) Looking good or stylish
d) When the going gets tough the tough go shopping
e) Being on top of the latest trends
f) Celebrating the economic and technological progress
Presumptions
a) It’s flaky to be concerned about your inner or spiritual life
b) You have a right to be entertained by the media
c) Your body is pretty much like a machine
d) Bigger is better
e) Time is money
f) What gets measured gets done
g) It makes sense to compartmentalize your life into separate spheres
Traditionalists
a) 25% of population or 48,000,000 people
b) There are more ethnic Catholics, uneducated people and people from small towns and rural areas
c) Many are African American or Hispanic
d) Average age is mid-fifties and average income is $24,000
Values and Beliefs
a) Patriarchs should again dominate life
b) Feminism is a swearword
c) Family, church and community are where you belong
d) The conservative version of their own religious beliefs must be upheld
e) It is important to regulate sex and abortion
f) All the guidance you need for your life is found in the bible
g) Freedom to carry arms is essential
h) Foreigners are not welcome
Cultural Creatives
a) 75% are involved in volunteering vs. 60% of general population
b) They are good at synthesizing very disparate, fragmented pieces of information
c) 78% say that America needs to consume a smaller portion of the world's resources
d) 60% are women
e) They are disenchanted with owning more stuff, materialism, greed, me-firstism, status display, glaring social inequities of race and class, society's failure to care adequately for children, elders and women and their hedonism and cynicism that pass for realism in modern society
f) They have changed to having a worldview
g) Perseverance, an impatience with hype, a capacity for self reflection
h) There are 50,000,000 in the US. 24,000,000 are the creative leading edge or core group; the other 26,000,000 are called the green cultural creatives
Core Group
a) They combine a concern for social justice and a concern for the inner life
b) 91% consider helping other people as extremely important
c) 89% believe every person has a unique gift to offer
d) 82% want to develop more self-awareness
e) 77% say that finding a life purpose is more important than making money, 36% higher then the general population
f) 67% are women
g) 58% see discovering new things about yourself as important
h) Very active in the consciousness movement more so then green CCs
Lifestyles
a) Buy more books and magazines and watch less TV
b) Aggressive consumers of arts and culture
c) Careful consumers
d) Not the technology innovators
e) Enjoy cooking and good food
f) Home and its looks are very important
g) Vacation travel
h) Experiential consumers
i) Holistic everything
The promise of Cultural Creatives
a) They are a coherent subculture except for one thing- they are missing self-awareness as a whole people. When asked how many share their values they guess 5-10%.
b) They have not formed a sense of collective "us"
c) Many live a soul oriented life yet feel isolated in their convictions
d) They want a cultural new deal a chance to remake their lives and institutions around deeper values
e) Once they find their common values will they work together to implement them?
f) By doing so they may be developing a culture that will sustain us and our children's children over the long term
